A slice of the state of Salzburg

The Pinzgau

The Pinzgau was first mentioned in the year 923. Although it is the largest district in the state of Salzburg, it does not have the most inhabitants due to the landscape with its many mountains.

A special kind of vacation

In Pinzgau, you will find dreamy landscapes and untouched nature. Whether in the Hohen Tauern peaks, the Kitzbühel Alps, the Chiemgau Alps, the Steinernes Meer, the Loferer Mountains or the Leogang Mountains – you will find mountains everywhere here. The valleys in-between are home to a range of fauna and flora and are therefore interesting in themselves and well worth a visit. Of course, the mountains and glaciers should be actively explored. Take one of the region’s many gondolas up into the mountains and peaks, such as the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier and Weisssee lake, the Schmitten in Zell am See hiking and skiing region, Asitz in Leogang-Saalbach, Hochkönig in Maria Alm, the Kitzbühel Alps in Bramberg and the Wildkogel here in Neukirchen. Of course, these mountains can also be explored on foot or by mountain bike.

Bathe in the dark blue lakes or hundreds of turquoise blue and ice-cold mountain lakes. Cycle along the famous Tauernradweg cycle path towards Zell am See and travel back on the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn, a narrow-gauge railway with a steam locomotive. Or head up to a mountain meadow or mountain with dreamy views by mountain bike.

You can also visit one of the region’s many natural wonders. The ‘Saalachtal Natural Wonders’ (the Vorderkaserklamm gorge, Seisenbergklamm gorge and Lamprechtshöhle cave) in Salzburg’s Saalachtal valley, the Sigmund-Thun-Klamm gorge in Kaprun and the Kitzlochklamm gorge in Taxenbach. Also worth a visit are the mystical caves and show mines such as the ‘Entrische Kirche’ cave in the Gasteinertal valley, the Hochfeld show mine here in Neukirchen, the adventure show galleries in Mühlbach and the show mine with a museum in Leogang. Or how about a walk to Kaprun’s high mountain reservoirs. A car ride to the Großglockner is also recommended, Austria’s highest mountain at 3,798m.

And that’s just a short foray through the excursions of Pinzgau! As you can see, there are many excursions and sights on offer in Salzburg’s Pinzgau region – too many to explore in just one holiday!
